Review: ‘Broad Plain Darkening’, by Clare Rhoden

Broad Plain Darkening – Chronicles of the Pale #2

The safe world of the Pale is under threat.

Inside the policosmos, the new Regent Adaeze strives for dominance over the all-powerful Senior Forecaster, but the Pale’s humachine citizens are unaware that their city is close to collapse.

Outside on Broad Plain, the exiled human Hector undertakes a dangerous trek to find a safe haven for the orphaned twins.

How can anyone survive as their world shifts underneath them?

My Review

Thanks to rachel for organising this blog tour and to Clare for sending me copies of her books.

The story of The Pale continues in this book. It took me about 50 pages to get back into the story but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I stopped 30 pages from the end only because I really needed to sleep. I devoured the last pages in fifteen minutes.

I laughed, I cried, a worried that Feather and Helm wouldn’t meet up or that the vulpini would defeat the canini of the ravine. And the ongoing machinations of Jaxon of the Pale frustrated me. It got intense.

The adventures of the disparate characters and the changing perspectives kept me reading and transfixed by this broken world. I was totally invested in the canini, the Storm and the people of Newkeep Port. It was very immersive. The tension built as the different characters came together and the Pale discovers it’s own foundations are shaky and makes plans to survive.

The continuing tale of Hector, discovering himself through his interactions with the canini, the baby humans and then the Storm, was really gripping. Hints in Helm’s thought’s about his own adventures suggest origins for Hector. I really want to know how he came to be on the Pale.

A good follow up to the first novel. I can’t wait to read the third installment.

Hi I'm Rosemarie and I like to write. I write short stories and longer fiction, poetry and occasionally articles. I'm working on quite a few things at the minute and wouldn't mind one day actually getting published in print.
