My Review

Lagertha and Ragnar have become rather well-known in the last few years, thanks to the television series Vikings. The plot of the series use information from Book 9 of Saxo Grammaticus’ ‘The History of the Danes’. Lagertha is slipped in between Auslaug, the daughter of Brynhild and Sigurd (Siward), and Ragnar’s third wife, Thora. She isn’t mentioned anywhere else, while Ragnar is mentioned in quite a few sagas, because his story is the continuation of the Volsung’s Saga.

The first part was a well-written historical fiction and the second part is an exploration of the textual evidence available as a source for the fiction. I found the fiction convincing and well-written and the exploration of evidence useful. It is aimed at a non-specialist audience, clearly, but doesn’t shy away from the complexities of using a text written at least 300 years after the fact.
